I was going to go to the store. Then the most unbelievable thunderstorm started. So, while waiting it out (and it is almost over), I decided to replace the rather terrible emotes with better ones. We have quite a few new ones! Unfortunately, by putting them in the slots occupied by the old ones, I changed every one that had already been used to something wildly inappropriate. Fortunately, we have mostly used them in chat which you can edit. In fact, I might give it a try for you in a place or two,

Well, I downloaded a plug-in about an hour and a half ago that lets me organize smilies into categories. That is what I have been doing for the last hour and a half. It didn't work. I am so mad... but it has to be something simple. Maybe I will get it figured out for us tomorrow.

I am not sure I like this way of categorizing smilies. What you need to know is this. If you click on the smilie icon above, you will see all the smilies as usual. You also have an option to click on a box that says "Select Smil(ie)" If you click on it, you will see categories but the names of the smilies are not helpful (they are derived from the URL) You can take a chance and click on one and see if it is the one you want.
Otherwise, at the very bottom of the box there is a "view all" option. If you click on it, you get a very nice box full of smilies sorted into categories. This needs work since they are not sorted very well. I was too busy trying to get the coding right. You can also now use smilies in quick reply but you only get to choose from a very messy box. Ideally, I should download all of these to my computer and give them better names but it will be an appalling amount of work. So I think I will give this plug in a chance to prove its worth.

Well, I came thiscloseto fixing the smilie display. Then it all went wrong. I won't be able to fix it until tonight after I get home. So we will just have to add smilies the old fashioned way, for now.

I am slowly recreating the smilie categories. Of course, they are still available, uncategorized. The failure of the plug-in only means that they still aren't available in "Quick Reply" (they never were) and they aren't available in a nice category in "Reply". Other than that, all is well.

We now have 118 smilies ( ) categorized fairly reasonably with a number of boneheaded exceptions. The plug-in does not allow one to move things around and each smilie has to be numbered. So if I want to move #86 to the #4 position, I have to renumber every line from #4 on. A new version of the plug-in is in the works which will allow me to rearrange things more easily and when it is available, I will take care of the silliest of my mistakes.
For our purposes now, we have two possibilities. We can click on the smilie icon and use the uncategorized smilies as usual. OR we can scroll to the very end of the smilie box to "view all smilies" and look at (and choose from ) the categorized smilies. The "select smilie" box is a mess when you have as many as we have. It is only good if you have so few that you can give your smilies simple names: "sad" "sad1", happy, crying, etc. My smilies have much more complex names than that!
