To begin with we are forbidden to have denominations in Islam. We are to have just one Ummah and all Muslims are of one family
But in the Ahadith Muhammad(saws) said:
"The Jews will divide into 71 divisions, but only one will find Heaven, The Christians will divide into 72 divisions, but only one will find heaven. The Muslims will divide into 73 divisions, but only one will find heaven"
The numbers are not to be taken literal as in Arabic numbers have metaphorical meanings. An up to date interpretation is more like "Jews, Christians and Muslims will divide into many groups, but only a few from each will follow the true teachings." (Wording is mine, others may word it better)
Divide we have done although about 85-90% of us are of the Sunnah and hence get called Sunni.
The Shi'ite are the second largest group and make up nearly 10% roughly half of all Shi'a live in Iran.
Sufi are more difficult to define as there both Sunni and Shi'ite that follow Sufi'ism as a Madhab along with Sufi that consider themselves neither Sunni nor Shi'ite. It was originally a legitimate Sunni Madhab and a very beautiful part of Islam. Much is owed to them Including many of the Early Islamic writings, such as traditional prayers, songs, etc. It is a way of life based upon mysticism and inner reflections.
There are Non Muslims Groups that call them self Muslim and many non-Muslims count them is as being Muslim the 2 largest being
NOI (Nation of Islam)
and
Ahmadiyya
There are also Non Muslim religions, people often mistake for being Muslims
Yazidi
Druze
Ba'hai
Sikh
Hindu
Yazidi and Druze do dress identical and follow some parts of Islam. They are hybrid groups combining Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The Yazidi adding in some Zoroastrianism and the Druze adding in some pagan beliefs Most Yazidi are found in Iraq and Most Druze seem to be found in Israel.and the Palestine territories of Gaza and the West Bank
