Well, I closed yesterday on a house I cannot afford that needs thousands of dollars of updating. Sigh. It was a circus to the very end. Between 1 p.m. Monday and noon Tuesday the Hud settlement statement was reworked 5 times. Five times! This could only happen in Florida. I couldn't stand it any longer and took the one that said I owed the largest amount, ran to the bank and wired it to the closers (in Fla. that is the title company!) The bank officer looked at me ominously and told me that it might not get there in time (which would have meant closing today instead). Fortunately it did arrive in time for the closer to have a refund check ready for me since the highest figure was not the one they decided on.
Is that the limit or not? Not, as it turns out. I got a frantic email at 10:45 am. this morning with another document that should have been in the closing packet but was left out. If I did not sign it and get it back to the title company by noon, we would have to do everything over and close again tomorrow. I managed that. But I could so easily have been in a meeting and missed the email altogether!
Is my story over? No. Not at all. After the closing I was supposed to meet the guy who was going to measure for the painting and flooring of the house. He failed to show up. I met him today after work and he casually tells me that it will be 6 weeks before they can get to the project. I damn near had a heart attack. The owner of the company assured me less that two weeks ago that they could get to it within a week of the 15th. I need to move out of my rental house in 6 weeks and that is non-negotiable. So I am scrambling to find someone else to paint. It is a huge job too.
There is more trouble brewing ahead but I won't say more until it is certain.
