Hello
Thank you for the warm welcome Maggie and Woodrow, I am from Calgary, Alberta, I moved here 12 years ago, but I was born in Ethiopia, lived long years (Grade 1~12) in Saudi Arabia and the Philippines (University). Arabic is my native language, I also speak Amharic, Tagalog, and a bit English.
Where are you located Maggie and Woodrow?

Hello Thank you for the warm welcome Maggie and Woodrow, I am from Calgary, Alberta, I moved here 12 years ago, but I was born in Ethiopia, lived long years (Grade 1~12) in Saudi Arabia and the Philippines (University). Arabic is my native language, I also speak Amharic, Tagalog, and a bit English. Where are you located Maggie and Woodrow? I am about 400 miles South East of you over in Marion, North Dakota. I was born in Hartford, Connecticut 100 miles north of New York city. But I have lived in quite a few countries and US states. My native language was Lithuanian, but I was forbidden to speak it after I reached the age of 5 and my family stopped using it when I was around. My family wanted me to speak perfect English and thought being bi-lingual would make that difficult. I do speak Darija (Moroccan) Arabic some standard Saudi and understand the Tajweed. I also speak fairly well French, German, Russian and Tex-Mex Spanish. I am learning Tsalagi and Lakota (both are native American Languages) My second wife was Tsalagi (Cherokee) and currently many of my friends are Lakota, members of "Republic of Lakota" a group wanting to seperate from the USA and reclaim the land that was guaranteed to be a free nation under the Treaty of Laramie. The Calgary climate is a big change from the areas you lived in before. How did you adapt to the winters? At least you have a nice view of the Northern Lights.

Well, Calgary weather, one of the big problems here. when I came to Canada it was august, really hot summer, but at that time I used to put a thick jacket on and everyone else is in short sleeves shirts. people see me as being funny, but I was really cold
but time can get you used to that I guess

With a bit of time a person does acclimate well to the climate. How is the availability for Halal meat in Calgary? Although North Dakota raises about 1/3 of the halal meat sold in the USA very little is sold in North Dakota. I have become almost a vegetarian and usually only eat meat during Eid Adha. I do eat a lot of fish though. Salmon is often found at an affordable price.

Halal meat is everywhere in Calgary, I don't know if you know the fatwa of Sh. Salah Alsawi regarding Chicken in north America!! but he says it is ok.... I can elaborate more if you want
My wife likes fish so much, for me, not crazy about it... and I don't like to upset my fish in the Aquariums (joking)

Logically nearly all birds except birds of prey are halal. But I refuse to eat the "factory" produced chickens here in the states. I find the method of raising them to be cruel and will not support the chicken industry. However, I will eat local farm raised chickens when available. Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Saleh Al-Uthaymeen gave a fatwa in support of it pointing out that eating the poultry is permissable because that which is slaughtered by the Ahl-Kitab today is just as what was slaughtered by Ahl-Kitab in the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa salaam). The Ahl-Kitab are of the kufar whether they are in the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa salaam) or now.

Fair enough Woodrow, your objection is the way they were raised. and not the way slaughtered

I have a suggestion, can we have a sub-forum called "Suggestions"
also, if you run the mouse pointer over the thread titles, the writings disappear

Sure. A sub-forum will be easy to create. I am not certain what you mean about the mouse pointer making the writing disappear. I cannot do that.
