I moved here to take a new job about 5 minutes before the housing market crashed. That was three full years ago and I started my 4th year here in Sept. It has been a horrendous financial burden to carry that house and pay the whopper rent that housing commands here. Now the long wait is nearly over. Strangely, I am not excited at getting rid of the house. I had started to think of it as my "fall back" home because, frankly, I am not sure I want to stay here. Western Florida (except for the beaches and historic parts) is seedy like so much of Florida. The lack of zoning laws in the state means that you find mansions across from cement mixing factories, beautiful middle class homes next to railroad tracks and trailer parks, etc. In Alabama, we have real neighborhoods. Not so here.
I have been looking at houses for the last month and, frankly, they are awful. Last night I went online and looked at homes in my price range in So. Alabama and the difference was incredible. I can get so much more house for so much less in Alabama and property taxes are almost non-existent. But I barely have one more move in me. The idea of moving two more times...!
I hate that this is happening during the holidays. I bet I have trouble getting the utilities turned off!

Just to add excitement to the mix, the lawyer did not get the closing documents I needed to sign and have notarized until 3 p.m. I had to fill 9 docs out, go find someone to notarize them and get them to UPS by 5 p.m. in order to overnight them to the closing lawyer. 2 lousy hours to do it all! I shouldn't have bothered. I could easily have driven to the closing and while that is a bore, it would have been far less stressful. Still, barring any unforeseen disasters, it is all over but the shoutin' as we southerners say.

Closings are nice, after they are done and over.

Yup! I have never had one this difficult. But it looks like it is finally in the bag.
