Can we talk? This is making my life very difficult and I need to vent. Poor Leo, as some of you may recall, has developed diabetes. A fairly common accompaniment to out of control blood sugar is diarrhea. This has been going on for at least 8 weeks. When you have 6 cats and work all day, it is pretty hard to figure out who is doing what. Well to make a long story short, it is Leo and he had to spend another two days at the vet last week to try to make sure that there isn't a hidden illness behind this. It looks like his gut just needs to be repopulated with the right kind of bacteria. So I have been mixing a probiotic in his food called Fortiflora and it might be starting to work. The only thing is, it is pretty expensive and I have to mix it in everyone's food because he basically eats some of everyone's food.
What is worse, given what it costs, all of my cats like it and one of my cats is mad for it. She will try to get in the cabinet to find it; if it is out, she will try to open the packet. It smells like beer and it wouldn't surprise me if it is hops and barley. In any case, she can't wait for me to mix it in her food. She licks it right off the top when I sprinkle it on. I bought some plain yogurt this p.m. because the Fortiflora is so expensive and yogurt ought to do good. Leo is a big cat and although I have very big boxes for him, he still doesn't get that he might be in it and his butt isn't. Need I say more? Every day I am cleaning up after him. Today's episode was the worst ever.
I bought a blood sugar monitor and test strips 2 weeks ago. I spent a mere $120 on them. I can't get a drop of blood out of the cat. My vet even stayed after hours to show me good places to poke him on Friday but no luck. I simply can't hit the right spot. Without knowing his numbers, I cannot adjust his insulin. This is extremely frustrating because he is badly out of control. In fact, his vet got numbers that she hasn't seen in a cat before. I am definitely not happy because he needs a higher dose but insulin is dangerous stuff to play with. I need his numbers!!!
Nobody better ask me how my weekend has been.
